Stop Caring About What They Think | Expressing Our Masculine Energy Healthily (Astrology)

As a black female born and raised in the United States, people have tried to put me in a box ever since I started walking. This is, unfortunately, part of the human experience no matter how one identifies, expresses oneself, or what one does in the world. Being who we uniquely are is often met with resistance due to limited thinking. However, I’m here to tell my distinctive story and how it relates to the role of the Sun in our astrological charts.

As a preteen, I often got teased by classmates for sounding like a white person talking because I spoke proper English and I didn’t speak Ebonics, which is African-American Vernacular English. This caused me to feel isolated from my fellow African-American classmates at times because they told me that I was trying to be white, when in fact, I wasn’t trying to be anything other than myself. The way I expressed myself was disrespected and deemed unacceptable. It made me depressed because I felt like something was inherently wrong with me. When I tried to speak in Ebonics, it felt unnatural to me and people could sense that I was putting on an act. I realized that since I couldn’t please people either way, I may as well speak the way that comes naturally to me. Fortunately for me, as I got older, the teasing subsided.

Years later, when I was planning to study abroad in college, one of my peers told me, “Why are you moving abroad? Black people don’t travel.” I thought that idea was so absurd, that it made me giggle because both of my parents were black globe trotters. I ended up studying abroad in Uruguay for a year when I was 20 years old. I can only describe how the doors that experience opened for me in another blog because I can’t do it justice in a couple of sentences in this one. Suffice it to say that this was the beginning of my journey to listening to my inner compass and following an inspired path, despite people shaking their heads in disagreement at my choices.

Six years later, I moved to Mozambique, a country in the southeast region of Africa. Before moving there, I was met with resistance once again. Someone said that I shouldn’t move there because there are cannibals in Africa and I shouldn’t go unless I wanted to get gobbled up by a wild tribe. I rolled my eyes and ended up teaching English there for over two years. I had the most transformative time of my life. Again, the details of this adventure are for another blog post.

It’s essential to take what others have to say about what we should and shouldn’t do and who we should and shouldn't be with a grain of salt, especially when we’re not harming ourselves or others. When we suppress what flows through us naturally, we can regret that we lived a life of people-pleasing.

In our birth chart, Surya, one of many Hindu names for the Sun, represents how we express our individuality. This can come in the form of how we dress and how we talk, to our occupation and what we do that inspires us. The Sun is responsible for our masculine energy, while the Moon, which corresponds to our mother/mother figure, reflects our feminine energy. According to Brihat Parashatra Hora Sastra (what a mouthful!), unlike the Moon which has no enemies, the Sun has two enemies – Saturn and Venus.  Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to have Surya blemished in a chart because of his enemies. A strong father figure is a shining example in our lives who supports our individuality consistently. This results in us having a strong sense of Self, which gives us the self-confidence to do what we’re meant to do in the world and that thing should reflect who we truly are. With a good Sun, we do what we’re supposed to do in life as we contribute to society without harming ourselves or others and without confusion. If we have an afflicted Sun, we must heal our masculine energy. We can first do this by learning more about who we are through studying astrology, getting astrological readings, taking career aptitude assessments, and so on.

I must admit, Surya is far from perfect in my chart and I’m sensitive to when people try to tell me what I should be doing in my life and how I should adhere to certain societally imposed limitations. The person that society believes I am supposed to be and who I am are not 100% aligned. Even though my life doesn’t necessarily fit societal expectations, I couldn’t be happier with my life because I don’t feel like I’m a fraud. I’m following an inspired path.

We think we have all the time in the world but life passes us by like a summer’s breeze. Another quality of a solid Sun in our charts is that it helps us to mind our own business. When we’re doing what truly inspires us, we don’t have time to be involved in workplace drama, compare what we have and don’t have with others, and so on. We’re happy because we’re making the best of the short time we have on earth by living an inspired life.

Have you read the viral article entitled, “Regrets of the Dying” by Bonnie Ware? As a former palliative care nurse, Ware had the opportunity to ask people who were on their deathbeds what their biggest regrets in life were. The number one regret that her patients recited was, “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” So many of us make life decisions based on what others are doing or what is deemed acceptable in our family, culture, religion, or country. That’s not a bad thing if that thing reflects who we truly are. But a lot of times, the ideas of what and who we should be aren’t based on the truth of who we are. What I’ve found is that someone will still disapprove of our life choices even if we do things “perfectly” in society’s eyes. There will always be someone who disapproves so we might as well be who we’re meant to be. If we’re bedridden right before we transition to the next realm, we’re going to have to live with our life choices, and not our parents, children, bosses, or strangers.

At the end of the day, whatever is meant to happen will happen. The Universe won’t allow us to have certain experiences if we’re not meant to. We can pray all day to our favorite deities and light candles in their honor hoping that we marry a certain type of person or get a particular job, but if something is not meant for us, it won’t happen. People often judge others for marrying someone of the same sex or of a different race, culture, religion, disability, or socioeconomic status but who are we to say what experiences a soul should or shouldn’t have? It’s between that individual essence and the Universe. Remember, the Sun is about minding his own business because he has an inspired mission to accomplish.

Bhagavad Gita 18.47: It is better to do one's own dharma, even though imperfectly, than to do another's dharma, even though perfectly

People can also be highly critical of another person’s career, which is another indicator of Surya. As an astrologer, many people judge what I do by saying it’s demonic or they assume that I scam people. But I practice and study this ancient spiritual and scientific system because it reflects who I am. At my core, I’m an open-minded spiritual philosopher, healer, life-long learner, humanitarian, and self-improvement junkie. These are some qualities that astrologers often have. When someone does something despite society’s criticism of that thing, it’s good because it exemplifies that the person is being who they are because it can be uncomfortable, lonely, and disheartening to do things that don’t get the approval of others.

Even so-called “bad” experiences are meant to teach us valuable lessons. Part of being human is making mistakes. That’s how we learn and grow. Over the years, I’ve learned to let go of judging others and myself so harshly. It’s liberating to remember that everything is falling into place, including the broken pieces, and that I have a limited understanding of what should and should not be happening.

I hope you enjoyed reading some valuable lessons we can learn from the brilliant, creative, and unique essence of the Sun, whose light shines within us all. Let me know how you act on what inspires you in the comment section below.
